The project "Level Crossing via Radio" is an R&D led and developed by ENYSE along the last few years. The project has ended with the approval of the system by ADIF, the public administrator of the railway infrastructure in Spain.
The project "Level Crossing via Radio" has designed and developed a level crossing control system which guarantees the safety of the crossings, taking advantage of new technologies to increase energy efficiency and reduce implementation costs.
Under these two basic premises, the level crossing uses wireless radio communications with a protected frequency band between the devices installed in the railway and the level crossing. This development avoids the installation of traditional communications wiring with the obvious savings in the construction of the corresponding trenching.
A statistical study comparing the costs of implementing traditional level crossings and the estimated costs of the proposed system reveals that the savings achieved with this solution represents 30% of the total cost. These savings are due to the fact that the communications wiring trenches and ducts are no longer needed.
The proposed wireless communications level crossing has been designed to use high energy efficiency hardware components to, allowing installations to be supplied with renewable energies. This type of energy supply also avoids the installation of ducts and trenches for power cabling. Considering a standard scenario, with 30 trains a day, it is estimated that a maximum consumption of 5 Watts can be achieved.
